Supta Matsyendrasana

Animated Supine Twist

Scroll to move from a neutral stand into Supine Twist. With reduced motion, the final shape stays still.

Body areas

  • back
  • hips

Goals

  • calm
  • flexibility

Alignment cues

  1. Lie on the back with arms wide in a T shape at shoulder height
  2. Bend both knees and drop them together toward the right side
  3. Keep both shoulders heavy on the mat while the gaze faces up
  4. Keep breathing steadily without forcing the knees to the floor
  5. Return through center and repeat with knees falling left

Variants

  • Knees on a bolster. Place a cushion under the stacked knees so they hover instead of reaching the floor
  • Eagle wrap legs. Cross one thigh over the other before twisting for a narrower leg stack

Supine twist (supta matsyendrasana)

Supine twist keeps the back flat on the floor while both knees fall to one side and the arms stay wide like a T in the atlas side view.

Why it helps

MedlinePlus describes slow breathing as part of everyday stress relief in general (Relaxation techniques for stress (MedlinePlus)). NCCIH stress notes refer to yoga overall, not this twist alone (Yoga: Effectiveness and Safety (NCCIH)).

How to do it well

Lie on your back, spread arms to a T at shoulder height, and bend both knees. Drop both knees toward the right while both shoulders stay grounded and the gaze stays up or turns gently away from the knees. Soften the jaw and keep breathing steadily without pushing the legs to touch the floor. Hold several breaths, return through center, and mirror the legs to the left with the same shoulder heaviness.

A common mistake and how to scale it

A common mistake is lifting the opposite shoulder to chase depth, which turns the twist into a neck crank. Scale by placing a bolster under the knees so they rest at a comfortable height while the upper back stays quiet.

When to use caution

Twist gently if lumbar spine disease makes rotation sensitive. NCCIH also advises clinician guidance for knee or hip injuries and severe high blood pressure (Yoga: Effectiveness and Safety (NCCIH)).

Practice with the atlas

Take four breaths per side, unwind through center, and notice whether both shoulders feel equally settled before savasana.
