Animated Staff Pose
Scroll to move from a neutral stand into Staff Pose. With reduced motion, the final shape stays still.
Alignment cues
- Sit with legs together and feet flexed
- Press the palms beside the hips and lengthen the spine
- Draw the front ribs in slightly without slumping
- Point the kneecaps up and press the thighs down
- Imagine a string lifting the crown of the head
Variants
- Blanket lift. Elevate the hips to help the pelvis tilt forward
- Bent knees. Soften the knees while learning to sit tall
Staff pose (dandasana)
Staff pose is seated alignment: legs long, spine tall, hands pressing beside the hips.
Why it helps
Qualified-instructor guidance on NCCIH is about yoga practice broadly, not this seated baseline shape (Yoga: Effectiveness and Safety (NCCIH)).
How to do it well
Sit with legs extended and inner feet together or hip-width. Flex the feet, press thighs toward the floor, and stack shoulders over hips. Place hands beside hips and press down to lift the chest without leaning back. Draw lower ribs in gently and breathe quietly through the nose. Feel the crown reaching up while sit bones anchor down.
A common mistake and how to scale it
A common mistake is leaning back on the hands with a rounded lumbar curve. Scale by sitting on one or two folded blankets until the pelvis tips forward and the spine can stack neutrally.
When to use caution
Use props so the spine can stay neutral. Seated work may need modifications with lumbar spine disease or knee or hip injuries; NCCIH advises discussing those with a clinician (Yoga: Effectiveness and Safety (NCCIH)).
Practice with the atlas
Hold the tall staff shape for five breaths, then release the hands and notice whether the legs feel evenly engaged.
