Seated Spinal Twist

Ardha Matsyendrasana

Animated Seated Spinal Twist

Scroll to move from a neutral stand into Seated Spinal Twist. With reduced motion, the final shape stays still.

Body areas

  • back
  • hips

Goals

  • flexibility
  • calm

Alignment cues

  1. Sit with one leg folded in and the other knee lifted with foot flat on the floor
  2. Hook the opposite elbow outside the lifted knee
  3. Place the back hand on the floor behind the hips for leverage
  4. Lengthen the spine on inhale and turn on exhale
  5. Keep both sitting bones weighted evenly

Variants

  • Hug the knee. Wrap the arms around the lifted knee instead of hooking the elbow
  • Bottom leg extended. Extend the bottom leg when hip mobility is limited

Seated spinal twist (ardha matsyendrasana)

Ardha matsyendrasana sits with one knee up, the opposite elbow hooked outside that knee, and the back hand planted behind the hips.

Why it helps

MedlinePlus describes slow breathing within everyday stress relief (Relaxation techniques for stress (MedlinePlus)). NCCIH stress summaries refer to yoga practice broadly (Yoga: Effectiveness and Safety (NCCIH)).

How to do it well

Sit tall with the left leg bent in and right foot outside the left knee. Root the right hand behind the hips, inhale to lengthen, and exhale to hook the left elbow outside the right knee. Twist from the rib cage while both sitting bones stay grounded. Gaze follows the twist or stays forward for neck comfort.

A common mistake and how to scale it

A common mistake is hiking the hips and twisting from the lifted shoulder instead of the spine. Scale by hugging the knee with both arms, or by keeping the back hand on a block behind you, but not both at once.

When to use caution

Rotate gently if lumbar spine disease makes twists sensitive. NCCIH also notes knee or hip injuries and severe high blood pressure as clinician topics (Yoga: Effectiveness and Safety (NCCIH)).

Practice with the atlas

Take five breaths per side, unwind through center, and finish in staff pose before standing up.
