Seated Forward Fold
Paschimottanasana
Animated Seated Forward Fold
Scroll to move from a neutral stand into Seated Forward Fold. With reduced motion, the final shape stays still.
Alignment cues
- Sit tall with legs extended and flexed feet
- Hinge from the hips and reach the chest toward the toes
- Bend the knees if the back rounds early
- Hold the shins or use a strap around the feet
- Keep the neck aligned with the spine
Variants
- Bent knees. Keep knees softly bent to prioritize a long spine over leg straightness
- Strap around feet. Use a strap to reach without yanking the shoulders forward
Seated forward fold (paschimottanasana)
Seated forward fold is a floor hinge: legs extended, spine folding from the hips over straight or softly bent legs.
Why it helps
MedlinePlus relaxation guidance is about breathing habits in daily life, not this seated fold (Relaxation techniques for stress (MedlinePlus)). NCCIH evidence likewise describes yoga generally (Yoga: Effectiveness and Safety (NCCIH)).
How to do it well
Sit on a level pelvis with legs extended and feet flexed. Inhale to lengthen the spine, exhale to tip forward from the hip creases. Hands may hold feet, shins, or a strap; neck stays a continuation of the spine. Keep knees softly bent if hamstrings protest, and breathe steadily rather than pulling with the arms.
A common mistake and how to scale it
A common mistake is rounding the upper back to grab toes while the sit bones lift off the floor. Scale by sitting on a folded blanket and looping a strap around the feet to keep length in the spine.
When to use caution
Fold from the hips, not by collapsing the chest. Lumbar spine disease, severe high blood pressure, and knee or hip injuries are among the conditions NCCIH says may require clinician guidance before yoga (Yoga: Effectiveness and Safety (NCCIH)).
Practice with the atlas
Fold for eight breaths, inhale to lengthen halfway, then release and sit in staff pose briefly.
