Reverse Warrior

Viparita Virabhadrasana

Animated Reverse Warrior

Scroll to move from a neutral stand into Reverse Warrior. With reduced motion, the final shape stays still.

Body areas

  • legs
  • shoulders

Goals

  • strength
  • focus

Alignment cues

  1. Bend the front knee deeply in a wide warrior stance
  2. Reach the front arm overhead with palm facing back of the mat
  3. Slide the back hand down the back thigh toward the calf
  4. Keep the hips steering toward the side while the side body lengthens
  5. Anchor through the outer edge of the back foot

Variants

  • Shorter stance. Step feet closer to ease load on the front knee
  • Back hand on hip. Keep the rear hand on the hip instead of sliding down the leg

Reverse warrior (viparita virabhadrasana)

Reverse warrior keeps a deep front knee bend, sweeps the front arm overhead, and slides the back hand down the back thigh.

Why it helps

Stress notes on the NCCIH yoga page describe research on yoga as a whole, not this variation alone (Yoga: Effectiveness and Safety (NCCIH)).

How to do it well

Enter from warrior II with the front knee bent and back foot grounded. Flip the front palm up and arc the arm overhead while the back hand glides down the back thigh. Side bend comes from the waist without collapsing the front knee inward. Gaze can lift to the top hand or stay forward for neck ease. Breath stays smooth while the legs hold the lunge.

A common mistake and how to scale it

A common mistake is collapsing the chest toward the back thigh instead of opening the side waist, which jams the front knee. Scale by keeping the back hand on the hip and shortening the stance until the front thigh stays aligned.

When to use caution

Stay near a wall if balance feels uncertain in the lunge. NCCIH cites knee or hip injuries, lumbar spine disease, balance issues, and severe high blood pressure as reasons to consult a clinician (Yoga: Effectiveness and Safety (NCCIH)).

Practice with the atlas

Hold three breaths, return to warrior II, straighten the leg, and change sides before a gentle fold.
